Description This laboratory test will check your water sample for the presence of Legionella. Legionella Analysis: There is a duty of care in the UK to perform routine analysis of water samples for the presence of Legionella, a group of organisms that cause pneumonia like illnesses particularly in those that are elderly or immunocompromised. The analysis show results for Legionella pneumophila sgr 1 as well as sgr 2-14. Systems which should regularly be sampled for Legionella: Cooling towers, evaporative condensers and fluid coolers (quarterly); domestic hot-water systems with water heaters that operate below 60˚C; equipment that creates a water spray and use water at temperatures favourable to growth of the organism; spas and whirlpools; dental water lines; healthcare premises (recommended quarterly); care homes (recommended quarterly); buildings where biocides are used instead of temperature, other sources including stagnant water in fire sprinkler systems and warm water for eye washes and safety showers. For the UK, the Approved Code of Practice, The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems (ACOP L8) published by the HSE, details the requirements for regular monitoring and measuring that is required to take place to demonstrate the control of Legionella.
